Plasma Cutting
High-speed metal cutting using a superheated plasma arc for medium to thick plate materials.
Plasma cutting is the workhorse of plate fabrication, offering the best combination of speed, thickness capacity, and cost-effectiveness for cutting steel plate and structural shapes. High-definition plasma systems approach laser quality on materials up to 3/4 inch thick. CNC plasma cutting tables range from small shop units to large gantry systems with 40-foot or wider cutting beds. Many shops combine plasma cutting with oxy-fuel cutting heads on the same gantry, allowing them to handle both thin and very thick plate. Bevel cutting capabilities enable weld preparation without secondary operations. When sourcing plasma cutting services, consider the shop's table size relative to your part dimensions, their ability to nest parts efficiently for material optimization, and their tolerance capabilities. High-definition plasma (fine plasma) provides significantly better edge quality than standard plasma for applications where tolerances matter.
