Carbon steel is the most widely used material in metal fabrication, valued for its combination of strength, weldability, machinability, and affordability. From structural beams and pressure vessels to machined components and sheet metal enclosures, carbon steel serves as the default material for the majority of fabricated metal products. Common fabrication grades include ASTM A36 (general structural), A572 Grade 50 (high-strength structural), A516 Grade 70 (pressure vessel plate), and AISI 1018/1045 (machining bar stock). Each grade offers different mechanical properties suited to specific applications. Hot-rolled and cold-rolled forms are available in sheet, plate, bar, tube, pipe, and structural shapes. When specifying carbon steel fabrication, consider the service environment. Carbon steel requires corrosion protection (paint, powder coat, galvanizing, or plating) for outdoor and wet environments. For elevated temperature or corrosive chemical service, upgraded grades or alternative materials like stainless steel may be more appropriate.
