Lightweight, corrosion-resistant non-ferrous metal widely used in aerospace, transportation, and architectural fabrication.
Aluminum fabrication serves industries where weight reduction, natural corrosion resistance, and thermal or electrical conductivity are important design considerations. At roughly one-third the density of steel, aluminum enables significant weight savings in transportation, aerospace, and portable equipment applications. Common fabrication alloys include 6061-T6 (structural, widely weldable), 5052-H32 (sheet metal forming, excellent corrosion resistance), 3003 (general purpose, highly formable), and 7075 (aerospace, high strength). Each alloy has different fabrication characteristics. Not all shops experienced with steel have the equipment and expertise to fabricate aluminum properly. Aluminum fabrication requires attention to several unique factors: dedicated cutting tools to prevent smearing, proper filler wire selection for welding, allowance for heat-affected zone softening in heat-treatable alloys, and different bend allowances compared to steel. Finishing options include anodizing (unique to aluminum), powder coating, and chemical conversion coatings.
