Stainless steel fabrication requires specialized knowledge and equipment due to the material's unique properties including work hardening, heat sensitivity during welding, and contamination concerns. The result, however, is corrosion-resistant products that serve demanding applications in food processing, pharmaceutical, chemical, marine, and architectural environments. The most common fabrication grades are 304 (general purpose) and 316/316L (enhanced chloride resistance). Duplex grades like 2205 offer double the strength of austenitic grades. Ferritic and martensitic grades serve specific applications. Proper material handling is essential to prevent carbon steel contamination, which can cause surface rust on otherwise corrosion-resistant stainless steel. When sourcing stainless steel fabrication, look for shops with dedicated stainless steel areas or equipment to prevent cross-contamination with carbon steel. Verify their welding procedures include proper purge gas techniques for back-side protection. Discuss surface finish requirements, as stainless steel is often specified with specific finishes from mill finish to mirror polish.
