Waterjet Cutting

Waterjet cutting is the most versatile cutting process available, capable of cutting virtually any material with no heat-affected zone. This cold-cutting process is essential for heat-sensitive materials, thick plate, and applications where thermal distortion or metallurgical changes are unacceptable. Abrasive waterjet systems mix garnet abrasive with ultra-high-pressure water (60,000-90,000 PSI) to cut metals up to 12 inches thick. Five-axis waterjet heads can compensate for the natural taper of the cut stream, producing parts with straight, accurate edges. Dynamic waterjet technology further improves speed and quality. Waterjet cutting is ideal for aerospace titanium and aluminum, hardened tool steel, laminated materials, and any application where heat from laser or plasma would be detrimental. While generally slower than thermal processes, the absence of heat effects often eliminates the need for post-cut machining or stress relieving.

Waterjet Cutting FAQ

What are the advantages of waterjet cutting?

Waterjet cutting produces no heat-affected zone, eliminating thermal distortion and material property changes. It cuts virtually any material up to 12 inches thick, maintains tight tolerances, and leaves a smooth edge with no burrs.

How accurate is waterjet cutting?

Modern abrasive waterjet systems achieve tolerances of +/- 0.003 to 0.005 inches on most materials. Five-axis waterjet heads can compensate for taper, further improving part accuracy.
